Most companies however, Do not hire fresh out of school. I do however, have experience in the medical field working the front office for 6 years. How do I go about to start working from home? Are any of you or know anyone who does this from home?

Your right, most employers require years of experience or graduation from an AHDI-approved Medical Transcription course. Having an associates in MHIM does not give you the Certificate in Medical Transcription that most employers like to see. However, it doesn’t hurt to ask around. In this field, networking is extremely important. Tell everyone and anyone, both online and off, that you are in search of an at-home MT position. Contact a few at-home employers (a Google search will bring up some of the larger companies) and request a skill assessment test. Many will hire you right away if you are able to pass. If you can not pass their test, then you know you will need to get additional education.
I worked several years in the Medical Transcription field. It is legit, but there are a LOT of scam.
The US Department of Labor states” Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow 14 percent from 2006 to 2016, faster than the average for all occupations. Demand for medical transcription services will be spurred by a growing and aging population. Older age groups receive proportionately greater numbers of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that require documentation. A high level of demand for transcription services also will be sustained by the continued need for electronic documentation that can be shared easily among providers, third-party payers, regulators, consumers, and health information systems. Growing numbers of medical transcriptionists will be needed to amend patients’ records, edit documents from speech recognition systems, and identify discrepancies in medical reports.”
“Wage-and-salary medical transcriptionists had median hourly earnings of $14.40 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $12.17 and $17.06. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $10.22, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $20.15.”
If your hoping to get into this field, though, you will most likely need training from an AHDI ‘approved’ program. Most employers require experience or participation in one of the top AHDI approved schools. If your looking into Medical Transcription pay the extra in tuition to attend an ‘approved’ school.
Many people have received training through inadequate programs only to find out that they are unable to find a job. AHDI sets the standards for MT courses. Employers know that graduates of these ‘approved’ courses have gained the skills necessary to begin their career as an MT. —— AHDI is the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity – http://www.ahdionline.org (formerly known as the American Association for Medical Transcription).
I attended Career Step and recieved a job (at-home) less than a week after graduating. I’ve received several more job offers since, but have stuck with my original employer because of the flexibility they offer. Career Step is an AHDI approved program and they are partnered with many of the major MT employers. In other words, their graduates get the jobs. Many companies require 2-3 years experience, however, a lot of these companies will waive this requirement if you graduate from the right school.
I recommend CS because they are partnered with MANY employers, self-paced (you can finish in a few months or take as long as over a year or two), and more affordable than many courses. Plus, I have personal experience (and success) with the program. Attending your local community college will give you a good chance at a job in-house, but if you are wanting to work from home, an online ‘approved’ course is the way to go. Choosing the right school is so important! They do offer financial aid and payment plans. :)

Try http://www.mtjobs.com They have the best source of listings for legitimate transcription services all over the U.S. Some services will hire new grads, especially since you have an actual degree in a healthcare-related field. This is your best chance of getting a job as a new grad.
As far as the advice to start in a hospital – hospitals do not usually hire new grads and almost always require at least three to five years of experience. You also need experience in several fields (cardiology, oncology, surgery, etc) to be able to do the “basic four” that is required in a hospital.
Don’t get discouraged. Apply to legitimate services with a good resume and cover letter and show them your best qualities. Don’t expect to make big money until you’ve had years of experience – and you won’t make it working for a service. Move into a hospital eventually – there’s where the money is. Good luck!
You can work at home as an MT easily. I graduated from Meditec.com and went through their internship program and was working right away. You need to find a list of MTSOs and test for them. If your studies did not include a lot of dictation practice, then you may need to get some more practice. The Absolute Experience or SUM CDs are great. Stedman’s offers a good book called Medical Transcription Fundamentals that would be helpful as well. Most good MT schools offer a list of MTSOs that hire their graduates. Meditec offers an internship to graduates of their program and graduates of other schools programs who are having a hard time finding employment. Good luck to you.
I do transcription from home…now. I’ve been a transcriptionist for 11 years. It’s unreleastic to think you can start from home right away. There are things that you can only learn in a hospital setting, and I would very much encourage you to start transcription in a hospital. Experience gets you a good work-at-home job later.
You can’t,my best friend has been coding for over 10 years at the best hospital in here in New Orleans,Ochsner.Just last year they let her take a laptop home,it is monitored weekly by the amount of work done.It was only to make extra income, not a full time position.
You don’t, until you have several years of experience – then you might be able to work at home for someone you have been working for in their office.
My friend got the offer after taking in office jobs from her employer that was shutting down many offices, she was one of thier top performers, and was scrutinized for months before the offer came through to her.
My other friend does court reporting, the job started in office after a few years she approached them about it.
You cant approach companies to do it, its thier computers, programs etc, its not a turn on your computer and just start working deal at all.
You just dont see ads for this ever that are real, why? Because its a matter of trust, and trust and performance are built while working with a company. You or anyone else has no way to prove you can do the job without being in thier office and proving first that your capable of such responsibility. The schools use that weakness of the excuse me but, laziness as a come on to, work from home!!!! take our classes. Its not that easy, my friend is not always happy about it, the chat monitor system logs every moment of her day, so its not like shes doing other things, the bar is set very very high, very high stress job now that shes working at home, she misses the office enviorment. The only real benefit is saving on child care for her youngest, the stress of trying to watch the baby and do her job has pushed her to the brink a few times.
