If you have a valid H1B, you should be able to work continuously until you get your work authorization card. When you apply to adjust your status after marriage, you must ask for a work authorization card. It is supposed to come within 90 days. However, until your adjustment of status is approved, as long as your H1B is still valid, you should be able to work.
If you change jobs, you need to get a new H1B. Without out, you cannot currently work. You’ll have to wait until after you have marriage, gotten the paperwork filed, and gotten your work authorization card to begin working. All of this could take a few months. When do you plan on getting married?
The best thing to do would be to stay at your current job until you get the work authorization card, and then switch jobs – or else you will have to get the new job to sponsor a new H1B.

If you are going to marry your boyfriend just for work authorization, don’t do it. Why not just have the new employer file an H1B transfer for you? As soon as the transfer is filed, you can begin working for the new employer immediately. Maybe you are reaching the limit for time spent in H1B status though (this would explain the marriage solution).
Through marriage, work authorization will take approximately 90 days FROM THE DATE YOUR HUSBAND FILES for a petition on your behalf. And your status will be conditional for about two years until you file to remove that conditional status (and get permanent resident status – Green Card).
The prior estimate of $8k certainly seems on the higher end. If the facts are straightforward, between $2-4k for legal fees would be more reasonable. And the filing fees are not very substantial.
For me it took 6 months, but it usually takes about 3 (from the day you submit your paperwork) if you submit everything correctly.
You will receive a document to authorize you to work for 1 year, and after the interview and everything (6 month later) your conditional residence, after that you need to start another process for you permanent residence.
Sounds complicated (it is a little bit), but it is not that bad, the only thing is that is very expensive, about $3,000 if you do it yourself, about $8,000 if you go to a lawyer.
